"I loved everything about it! Jamie was top notch from the moment he introduced himself. I can't complain about a single thing."

Pōhutu Geyser · Carving School · Day trip from Auckland
Te Puia is the institution of the group: the Pōhutu geyser, New Zealand's national wood-carving and weaving schools, and a cultural performance on a geothermal reserve. It reads more like a museum with living practice inside it than a night out.
The Experience
From the operator's own listing.
The reserve, the schools, the geyser, a performance.
Te Puia sits on the Whakarewarewa thermal valley, with mud pools and silica terraces on the walk in.
The largest active geyser in the southern hemisphere, and unlike the scheduled attraction elsewhere in Rotorua it erupts on its own timing — frequently, but not to a timetable.
New Zealand's national schools for both crafts are here and you can watch students working. This is the part that makes Te Puia unlike the other villages.
Included, and good, but it is one element of a larger visit rather than the centrepiece the evening villages build everything around.

The Institution
Te Puia does not sell a standalone ticket through the booking platform. The only listing that includes it is a full-day trip from Auckland ($227) that also takes in Wai-O-Tapu — roughly four hours on the road each way.
Everything after this is about the place itself, whichever way you get there.
Te Puia is where you go for the geyser and the crafts. The cultural performance is part of it, but if you want the pōwhiri, the hangi and a night built around them, the evening villages are the purchase.
Pōhutu is the largest active geyser in the southern hemisphere, and it goes on its own schedule — often more than once an hour, but not to a timetable. That is worth knowing against Rotorua’s other famous geyser, which erupts at a fixed daily time because it is induced.
The national carving and weaving schools are the real differentiator. Watching students work on pieces that take months is a different kind of cultural contact from watching a performance, and no other village here offers it.
They sit on the same geothermal field and visitors mix them up constantly.
Doing both is redundant for most visitors. Pick by whether you want the crafts and the geyser or the settlement.
Te Puia most often appears in the combination day tours we track — the $227 Auckland day pairs it with Wai-O-Tapu and a haka performance (300 reviews). If you are already in Rotorua, buying locally is usually simpler.

They are different evenings rather than better and worse versions of one. Te Puia runs $227 with 300 reviews at 4.8. Mitai and Whakarewarewa are the main alternatives, and the honest split is atmosphere, timing and food rather than how much culture you get. The full comparison, which no single village can publish about its rivals, is on which village to choose.
The evening village experiences include a hangi dinner; the daytime village walk does not. A hangi is a meal cooked in an earth oven over hours and at the evening villages the lifting of it is the centrepiece rather than a garnish. Check the individual listing for exactly what is served and whether transport from your accommodation is included, because that varies and it closes much of the apparent price gap.
A pōwhiri is a formal welcome with real protocol, not a warm-up act. Your group will usually be asked to choose a chief, and there are moments to stay silent and moments to move. The hosts explain it clearly beforehand and are gracious about it, but treating the welcome as a performance to talk through is the most common way visitors give offence. Beyond that: dress for the weather, arrive on time, and ask before photographing people.
